Financial support available during national lockdown

The Government is providing funding to local councils to support businesses, in two different ways:

  • Fixed grants for businesses ordered to close under national restrictions;
  • A discretionary fund that can be used to support businesses between November 2020 and March 2022.

National lockdown support grants

These grants are only available to business rate payers. They are one part of the Local Restrictions Support Grants scheme. These grants are for businesses that have been ordered to close under the national lockdown restrictions, and include:

  • Non-essential retail, such as clothing and homeware stores, showrooms (other than for rental), betting shops, tailors, tobacco and vape shops, electronic goods and mobile phone shops
  • Hospitality venues, such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars and social clubs
  • Accommodation, such as hotels, hostels, guest houses and campsites
  • Leisure and sports facilities, such as leisure centres and gyms, swimming pools, tennis and basketball courts, golf courses, fitness and dance studios, climbing walls, archery, driving, and shooting ranges
  • Entertainment venues, such as theatres, concert halls, cinemas, museums and galleries, casinos, amusement arcades, bingo halls, bowling alleys, skating rinks, go-karting venues, soft play centres and areas
  • Personal care facilities, such as hair, beauty, tanning and nail salons, tattoo parlours, spas, massage parlours, body and skin piercing services
  • Community centres and halls

How much will I get?

The amount of grant will depend on the rateable value (RV) of the property. One payment will be made for the 28-day period that the national lockdown is expected to last.

Discretionary grants (Additional Restrictions Grant)

The Government is providing funding to local councils to be used to support businesses both during the national lockdown and until the end of March 2022.

DBC is currently assessing provisional guidance from the Government. The guidance says that these funds can be used in many ways – for example, to assist businesses that do not receive business rates bills, or those that are severely impacted by the pandemic but which have not been ordered to close.

DBC is awaiting further guidance, including confirmation of how much funding will be allocated to Dacorum to support local businesses, and they will publish more information about this as soon as they can.
