What does Hemel mean to you?

Hemel Garden Communities programme is an ambitious development programme to transform the town of Hemel Hempstead and create new neighbourhoods to its north and east by 2050. The Hemel Garden Communities team (which includes Dacorum Borough Council, St Albans City & District Council and Hertfordshire County Council).

As part of the project, a new online platform has been set up, the Hemel Channel (on Instagram @HemelChannel), to host conversations and activities about all things Hemel. The team want invite everyone in and around Hemel Hempstead to explore the past, present and future of the town, to ensure the plans respond to the aspirations and needs of local communities.

To launch the Hemel Channel, the team are hosting two competitions, asking ‘What does Hemel mean to you?’ and ‘What will Hemel be like in the future?’ – each offering a chance to win a £200 bike voucher.

The competitions are designed to bring together everyone with an interest in Hemel, young and old, and to consider issues relating to the environment, communities and planning for the future.

You are invited to draw your future Hemel. Think as far into the future as you would like. Imagine far far ahead. Will your neighbourhood look different? How? What do you picture your workplace looking like? Will it have changed? What would you see when you walk down the street? How are you moving around?

Your drawing might be a map, or show how you think the entire town might look. It could also be a drawing of just one part of Hemel, a street or a park. It’s up to you.

We encourage you to get creative – use lots of colour, use a huge piece of paper, draw on something that isn’t paper, make your drawing move, draw with something other than a pencil!

The competition opens on 24th June 2020 and closes at midnight on 12th July 2020.

We have compiled some writing, pictures and videos about making a drawing of a place. We hope they might be interesting and helpful for you to complete the challenge! You can find them on the Hemel Channel Instagram (@HemelChannel)

The competitions will be judged in two categories – age 13 and under, and age 14+.
