Every one of us has experience of writing CVs and going for interviews, so we all have useful and practical advice to pass on to students.
Over the past 4 years we have seen 2555 pupils go through Connect Dacorum’s Employability Days with over 1,300 hours volunteered. Now in the 7th year Connect Dacorum is again running the Employability Skills programme in 2020. Can you help out?
We are looking for volunteers for half a day to help a small group of students (8-10 in each group) go through an interactive morning of CV writing, application forms and interview techniques. The day starts at 8.30am and finishes at 1.30pm. The students are in Year 10, so around 14/15 years old and just at the beginning of their thought process into careers and the world of work, so this is an introduction to that. They will have already drafted their very first CV at school so any valuable advice you can give on how to make it stand out to potential employers and what they need to focus on would be appreciated. The session is finished with some fun interview games.
The dates are:
Thursday 23rd April at Longdean School
Wednesday 1st July at Hemel Hempstead School
Last year the facilitators came from a wide variety of backgrounds and businesses/charities, all willing to give up their time to help shape the future generation and pass on valuable advice.
The pupils also completed a feedback sheet at the end of the day with all of them of them saying that it was helpful. One wrote “I have found about interviews and a variety of skills needed”. Another said “I will apply the communication skills that I have developed.”
If you can volunteer your time, please contact Cindy Withey at Connect Dacorum – approximately 15 people are needed for each day.
