Calling all Dragons

Would you like to take an opportunity to help shape the future of our next generation of entrepreneurs? If so, business mentors are being sort for the The Dragons Apprentice Challenge, which will commence in September.  This will be the eighth year of the programme in Dacorum, with over £76,000 raised for Dacorum charities so far.

So, what is the challenge?   Year 12 (16-year-old) students from Dacorum secondary schools enter teams of up to eight pupils as the Apprentices.  The teams are challenged to turn £100 into £1,000 or more for a Dacorum charity using their business skills. The team is matched with a business mentor (the Dragon) and also a local charity. The challenge starts in September and culminates at a finals evening in April 2020.  Some schools choose to enter more than one team.

The competition is actively recruiting business mentors (the Dragons) from local companies and invite you to apply now.  The Dacorum Challenge is becoming so popular with schools outside the area applying to take part.  They are therefore also recruiting Dragons in the St Albans and Harpenden area.

The Dragon’s involvement would be twofold.   Firstly, the cost, £50 towards the initial team capital and a £200 participation fee.   Secondly, and most importantly, time.  Your representative will need to attend a minimum of five meetings. However, the most successful teams have met on a fortnightly basis from October to February to keep motivation and organisation going, although much of this is often done digitally.  If you think you could spare the resource and time for the challenge, do register your interest.

So why should you take part?  Participation in the Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge offers a win-win opportunity for all parties involved, creating the opportunity for excellent partnerships between local community groups and charities, businesses and young people, creating a stronger community over the long term. It provides a structured means to promote and encourage engagement between charity/community groups, local businesses and schools.

Information on the 2018/19 challenge can be found here.
