New air pollution alerts for Hertfordshire residents

Dacorum Borough Council have partnered with Hertfordshire County Council, eight other district and borough councils and two Bedfordshire local authorities to launch a new Air Pollution Alert Service for residents.

Herts and Beds Air Pollution Alert System is free to sign up to and provides a text or email alert straight to your mobile phone when levels of air pollution in your area increase to a moderate level or above.

It aims to help people whose health could be at risk during periods of poor air quality -for example, those with a respiratory condition such as asthma or bronchitis.

Hertfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Prevention, Tim Hutchings, said:

“Poor air quality affects everyone, but especially the most vulnerable in our communities such as the very young, older people and those with existing health conditions.

“It’s a difficult problem to solve and we all need to take responsibility to make things better.

“I’m delighted to support this initiative. It will provide an early warning service which will help people minimise the effects on their health during periods of poor air quality.”

The launch of the new service coincides with the Clean Air Strategy, which was published by the Government earlier this year. The strategy looks to local authorities to reduce air pollution and provide alerts.

The Air Pollution Alert System is delivered by environmental consultancy Ricardo Energy and Environment.
