As part of the Hemel Hempstead Business Ambassadors’ commitment to bringing local employers together with local educators, the latest event in a series of Skills Networking Breakfasts took place on Friday 15 June.
Hosted by the award winning independent hotel and Hemel Hempstead Business Ambassador, Aubrey Park Hotel, the breakfast event saw 20 A-level students from Longdean School – also a Business Ambassador – meet informally with representatives from nine local businesses to discuss aims and aspirations for life after school and to hear of the expectations of potential employers.
Businesses represented at the event included recruitment consultants MRK Associates and Cobham Consulting, Aubrey Park Hotel, Dacorum Borough Council, Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce, Mediation Hertfordshire, transportation and logistics company Furnells, and Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and screening technologies.
Longdean School is an 11 – 18 mixed comprehensive school in Bennetts End, Hemel Hempstead. It is their belief that in any school the students come first as they only get one chance for a great education. The school strap line ‘rejoice in thy youth’ reflects the school ethos that students should be provided with a wide range of opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and values needed to succeed and have control and choice over the rest of their lives. It also acknowledges that the uniqueness of all members of the Longdean School community should be recognised and celebrated. They moved into brand new buildings in January 2017, where they will be hosting the next meeting of the Hemel Hempstead Business Ambassadors on Thursday 19 July.
Angela Cooke, Head of Careers Education at Longdean said “We were delighted for Longdean School to be invited to a Skills Networking breakfast at the lovely venue of the Aubrey Park Hotel.
“We took along 18 Year 12 students who were undecided about whether they wanted to go to University or to work. The students came away feeling so much more positive about their future. The main thing that really hit them was that it doesn’t matter if they get that first choice wrong, just follow their ideas at the moment and if or when they change that’s fine.
”I am very grateful for all those who gave up their time to talk to our students. It made me think that I would like to give this opportunity to all of our Year 12 students “
The enthusiastic students at the event found the event to be a positive and rewarding experience, “Was a really good eye opener to the alternatives to University and I was given really good advice on how to approach my future.” said one, with another stating that the businesses were “really helpful, they all had lots of knowledge of different sectors and really helped me consider my careers options.”
