Thanks fir recycling your Christmas trees

Residents of Dacorum have helped recycle around 4,000 trees at Dacorum Borough Council’s most popular free Christmas tree recycling event ever.

Thousands of Dacorum residents made a great start to being green this 2018 by taking part in the day, which was held on Sunday 7 January.

The event, which has been running in Dacorum for more than 20 years, sees collection and chipping sites set up in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring so that families can give their festive friend the chop. Whilst most managed to cram their trees into their car, one dedicated recycler impressed the chipping crews by bringing his tree along via a remote-controlled skateboard (pictured)!

Children joined their parents in waving a final farewell to their trees as they watched the chipper in action. Recyclers were then able to take bags of chippings away with them as weed preventative for their gardens.

Groups of Scouts from Berkhamsted, Tring, Potten End, Kings Langley and Gossoms End all pulled together, working hard to collect trees from their local areas and bring these along to chipping sites by the van load.

Portfolio Holder for Environment, Sustainability and Regulatory Services, Councillor Janice Marshall, said, “For many people, recycling their Christmas tree with us has become part of their yearly festive tradition. We are proud that this year has been the most popular one yet, and that new people are still discovering the event and choosing to recycle their trees with us. The local Scout groups also put in a great deal of effort in making this community event run smoothly and their hard work does not go unnoticed. Thank you to everyone who made the effort to recycle their real Christmas trees this year.”

Remember, you can still recycle your real Christmas tree at Hertfordshire County Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres in Eastman Way in Hemel Hempstead or Northbridge Road in Berkhamsted. Trees must not be left at any other recycling sites as this will be treated as fly-tipping.
